Bio

Born in Turmero, Aragua, 22 August 1919. He studied at the School of Visual Arts and Applied Arts of Caracas and graduated from this center, participated in the activities of the Free Art Studio, founded in 1948. Begins, between 1950 and 1952, a painting roosters Experiential topics, cathedrals plant, devils dancing. This painting makes you different runners-up receive a National Award for Painting in 1951. This gets a scholarship to continue studies in Europe. In 1952 he settled in Paris, where he lived until 1959. Returning to Caracas began work on his most famous series of works known as "Magic Items" which was released in the MBA, in an exhibition in 1965. Since then Abreu had an independent position, alone and far from institutional activities identified in their search for a magical realism with surrealist literary groups and protesters in the country. In 1975 he was awarded the National Prize of Plastic Arts. He died in Mamo, Vargas Department in 1993. Performed solo exhibitions at the MBA, 1952, 1962 and 1965 at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá, 1966, in Durban Gallery, 1975, 1980 and 1992. In 1967 he represented our country in the IX Bienal de Sao Paulo. In 1993 he gave his name to the Museum of Visual Arts in Maracay, Aragua state, and in this same center, posthumously, was presented the first retrospective exhibition of his work in 1994.
