Romulo Contreras
(Tovar, Venezuela, 1958)
He studied art (screen printing and craft paper production) in his home state of Mérida. He was part of a group of assistants for Jesús Soto. He participated at the Salon de Artes Plásticas del Occidente de Venezuela, in Mérida, 1980 and 1982; the Salón Nacional de Artistas Jóvenes, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas, 1981; the Salón Arturo Michelena, in Valencia, 1987; the Biennial of Cuba, 1986, and at the collective Pintores Venezolanos, in the Museum of Modern Art of Mérida, 1985, and Contemporânea Del Caribe, Santiago de Cuba, 1989.
He had individual exhibitions at various galleries of Tovar, Bogotá (1985), Caracas (1988) and San Cristóbal (1990). This last exhibition, held at the Galería Sin Limites, was presented by Félix George, who named Contreras as one of the highlights of the "New Venezuelan Abstract Painting."
