Bio
He was born in Porlamar, Nueva Esparta state in 1927. He studied at the School of Visual Arts and Applied Arts of Caracas, and later participated in the Free Art Workshop. Here he presented his first solo exhibition (1950). He lived in Europe, mainly in France, between 1950 and 1955. The group was part of the Disidentes. In this period, which followed the trend Carreño geometric abstraction, highlighting the relief and polyptychs convertible. Speaking on the experience of integration of the arts in the University City of Caracas (murals in the Faculty of Dentistry). Between 1961 and 1965 he developed his artistic activity within the informality, a movement that was booming at that time. In 1966 the Group founded in Caracas Expansionist. Between 1967 and 1978 he explored the possibilities of artificial light incorporated into the artwork. In 1972 he won the National Arts and represented Venezuela at the XXXVI Venice Biennale. In 1983 the MBA organized a retrospective exhibition of 96 of his works made since 1953. This retrospective was presented that year at the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, and in 1984 in Caracas. Major awards: Award for art students and Puebla de Bolivar Prize in the XI and XVIII of Venezuelan Art Show, 1951 and 1957, respectively, National Arts Award, 1972; Arturo Michelena Award, University of Valencia, Carabobo state, 1973. In 1978 he received the Order of Andrés Bello, third class.
